What are clay masks and how do they work on the skin?

Clay is a bio-mineral which is naturally concentrated, containing various mineral salts and trace elements. Clay is sediment composed of hydrated aluminum silicate and created by the slow erosion of granite. Various minerals, such as oxide or iron, salts, calcium, and trace elements, in varying proportion, alter its therapeutic qualities and color.
Clay is an antiseptic, scientifically proven to be active against a wide range of skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, erythema, psoriasis, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. It draws out impurities from the deeper layers of the skin and promotes healing and regeneration by helping to regulate fluid metabolism within the skin. As well as being anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and astringent, clays also do not cause allergic reactions. Clay applications are usually associated with face treatments but they work very well for toning the bust, thighs, stomach and upper arms. Furthermore, clays are used to alleviate dry scalp disorders, greasy hair, and to soften and condition the hair and skin.

Green Clay – contains silica, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc, selenium, cobalt, manganese, and many other minerals. It is the most absorbent of the clays that are mainly used for tissue repair, drawing toxins from the skin and normalizing excessive secretions of oil or sweat. This clay has a high absorption rate and absorbs impurities, dust, oil, bacteria, and makeup better than other clays. It cleans the pores and leaves the skin smooth.

Red Clay – consists of naturally occurring dolomite, silica, ferric oxide, and mineral oxides. It is high in iron oxide, hence its color. It is helpful for broken capillaries, bags under the eyes, and sensitive skin types. It is an excellent moisturizing and cleansing facial clay that removes impurities and toxins. It draws toxins from your skin, tightens, tones, and purifies. It leaves your skin silky smooth, but does not strip oil from the skin.

White Clay – is high in calcium, silica, zinc and magnesium. It is a mild clay used for sensitive, dry to normal skin. This clay cleanses, gently exfoliates, draws toxins from your skin, and stimulates blood circulation. It has similar properties as green clay and is suitable for face and body masks for young and sensitive, mature, and delicate skins.
